| A Leopold Street, Georgetown woman, who was nabbed by police at a Corentyne backtrack crossing on Sunday has been granted bail by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court. This is despite strenuous objections by the police.The woman, Anita Patricia Schuler, 35, a housewife of Leopold Street, Georgetown was on her way to Suriname around 10:00 hrs using the No.78 Village backtrack crossing when she was observed by alert police ranks acting in a suspicious manner.The woman was challenged and began acting in an even more suspicious manner. She was taken into custody at the Springlands Police Station where she was subjected to a search.During the search what appeared to be seeds, leaves and stem of the marijuana plant were found concealed in her underwear and in her vagina.The items were retrieved and tested and weighed and found to be 32 grams of marijuana. She was subsequently charged.In court, attorney at law Adrian Anamayah asked that bail be granted on the grounds that the woman has a small child to take care of. However Police Prosecutor Inspector Bernard Brown objected to bail on the grounds that there are no special circumstances put forward by the defence.Brown stated that the Prosecution is relying on the statutes. He mentioned that the charge goes towards the offence and not the offender.However Magistrate Singh granted bail in the sum of $100,000 and fixed the matter for continuation on January 12, 2017 |
