Georgetown will be the hub of activities for the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) X, which will feature 10 days of more than 100 cultural events during the period August 22 to 31.Approximately 25 official venues in Georgetown and its environs have been selected for various features of CARIFESTA.Among the most prominent of venues is the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, which was constructed with support from the Indian Government to host Cricket World Cup (CWC) in 2007.The venue will once again be the centre of attention, as it will host the symbolic opening ceremony for CARIFESTA on August 22, which will feature impressive performances and appearances by the participating countries from the Caribbean and Latin America.Among the many performances outlined by Artistic Director attached to the CARIFESTA Secretariat, Dr. Paloma Mohamed, will be a 100-piece steel orchestra, a 500-member youth choir, and a choreographed presentation by 1000 youths.The cultural presentation will be witnessed by over 15,000 people, who will also see the world class centre stage that was obtained by Government at a cost of US$605,519.The stadium also has its first set of night lights, which MUSCO lighting company installed. The company is a well-known supplier of lighting facilities to major sport events and stadiums around the world. It was awarded the contract to install six night lights at a height of about 160 feet.The Sophia Exhibition Centre is also in the process of re-construction for multiple CARIFESTA events, such as the fashion focus, the Indigenous village, grand market, and the culinary arts festival.The first phase of construction of the Amerindian village started recently, and will feature representatives of the nine Indigenous tribes of Guyana who will be showcasing different aspects of their culture. Landscaping and repairs to the main stage and sanitation facilities have also commenced.The National Park has been selected for the creation of an interactive youth village. About 12 centres/huts will be erected, focusing on HIV/AIDS education,Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic, physical exercise, music and dance lessons, environmental education, and the spirit of adventure.The literary arts, another interesting aspect of CARIFESTA X, will be featured through poetry recitals, story-telling, book-launching and creative writing workshops. The University of Guyana and the National Library will be hosts to some of these activities.Art work by some of the Caribbean and Latin America’s best artistes will be showcased at the National Museum, the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, and the African Heritage Museum.Other venues include the National Cultural Centre, the International Conference Centre, the Carifesta Sports Complex, Theatre Guild and Buddy’s International Hotel. |
