They are being represented by attorney at law Adrian Thompson, in association with Sasha Roberts.The lawyers in their applications requested reasonable bail.Chapman, according to the lawyer, is the mother of two minors, who solely depend on her.Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah objected to bail for all of the defendants. The prosecutor told the court that Hendricks is a born Jamaican who migrated to the United Kingdom.He said that she and Peres visited Guyana and they were staying at a popular hotel. Massiah explained that both defendants were travelling back to England on February 15. He said that ranks observed Hendricks acting in a suspicious manner and they told her that a search had to be conducted.The prosecutor noted that even before the search was conducted the woman admitted to the ranks that she was carrying an “illegal substance”.She was arrested and cautioned by ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.The hairpiece was removed and the illegal substance was found. It was later weighed and tested.Peres was caught after she was also seen acting in a suspicious manner. A search revealed that the illegal substance was in the woman’s hairpiece. The three defendants were all remanded.Sophia Hendricks They are all expected to make another court appearance on February 26.The matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court. This newspaper was told that additional charges are expected to be instituted against Chapman.A driver who was detained and questioned in connection with the cocaine bust was released on Sunday.Kaieteur News understands that the driver who reportedly took the two women to the airport was released without any charge.Sources close to the investigation have revealed that the man who was detained on Tuesday and was positively identified by the two women as the person to who took them to the hairdresser and the airport.On Monday last, one of the women was nabbed by ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch around 10:15 hours while she was about to board an outgoing flight.She was detained and searched after she was seen acting in a suspicious manner while she was checking in her luggage. She was searched and the cocaine was found concealed in her wig.Following a brief interrogation, the woman provided the name of another female passenger who had reportedly boarded the same flight she was about to board.Subsequently, the other passenger was held by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit. She too was found with cocaine hidden in her wig. |
