| A young man from Wayakabra, on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, took a bullet to the face, but ensured that two bandits — one armed with a handgun — left empty-handed after they attacked his home, at around 21:00 hours on Sunday night.Paul Simon, 20, almost lost his right eye after a bullet grazed his face during a bitter struggle with the men, after they had held his mother and other family members at gunpoint.But between himself and his brother, they managed to ward off the bandits, who fled into the darkness.Simon was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday, and sent away.Speaking with this newspaper, Beverly Simon, the injured man’s mother, said that they were watching television in the living room of their single-flat wooden house when they heard someone opening the door to their generator room. She said that they checked but did not see anyone, and returned to watching wrestling on TV.A short while later, sensing that the generator would soon run out of fuel, Paul Simon left the home and went across to another relative to borrow some gasoline.According to Beverly, she became worried when her son took too long to return home. However, she did not think that anything was the matter, and continued to watch the television.About 20 minutes later, she heard footsteps on her stairs and assumed that her son was back. There was a rapping on the door and still Beverly did not suspect that something was about to happen.Since she had left the door unlatched for her son, it was soon forcefully pushed in, and Beverley and the other occupants of the house found themselves staring down the barrel of a gun which was being held by a masked man. The other bandit had remained on the landing with her son, who was being held against his will.According to Beverly, the bandits had confronted her son when he left the house, and had used him to get into the property. “After de door push open, a gunman walk in and put de gun straight to me daughter head.He say, ‘Bring de cash and de jewellery’. None ah we didn’t respond, we just lef shock. We just end up just watching he,Cheap Basketball Jerseys, we ain’t say a word” the woman said.By this time, Paul Simon, recognising that the bandit who was watching him was not armed, took the chance and engaged him in a scuffle.Since Simon was getting the better of him, the bandit called for assistance from his accomplice with the gun.The gunman responded, and there was a struggle, during which a gunshot went off. Simon was hit in the face.The woman said that her other son, who was in the house, went to his brother’s assistance; and, using a small bench, he hurled it at the bandits, who were already bolting down the stairs.“Apparently like one ah dem get hit with de bench, and then they run out on the road. Dem ain’t get fuh tek nothing,” Beverly Simon said.The woman said that the men had threatened her son that they would be back, and she is taking every precaution to protect her family, since she believes that the men are from the general area. The police were informed and an investigation has been launched. |
