Alas, their pleas fall on deaf ears; their woes on hardened hearts.Whenever I witness these scourges, I thank God for his mercies and guidance that steered me away from drugs and its debilitating effects. I thank him for parents that were insightful enough to insist that I put something in my ‘numbskull’ to borrow my mother’s favourite term.Many are not so fortunate. Some people are victims of circumstances while others succumb to peer pressures that define their entire life. Here I speak not only of the drug addict who was lured into the first ‘spliff’ that quickly developed into an insatiable desire for drugs, or the kleptomaniac that might have pocketed someone’s property despite the fact that there was absolutely no reason so to do.I also speak of the victims of circumstances; those who might have been unfortunate to have lost both parents at an early age. Persons falling into this group are inclined to deviant behaviours if left to their own devices.Those without parents (whether through death or neglect) depend on the governmental and non governmental institutions to implement initiatives and programmes that will offer relief of some sort.Oft times such initiatives start at the doorstep of the Ministry of Human Services.Governments are elected by the majority because these numbers are impressed with their projected plans and projections towards the governing of their lives. While looking back is believed to precipitate falls, one cannot denounce the adage that ‘if one forgets the mistakes of his past, he is condemned to repeat them.’Those that felt weak and powerless over the years will now be given a chance to exercise their franchises and install a government that will propel this nation forward; one that will make migration (both legal and illegal) either an unpalatable desire or a temporary act.People can be gullible and fall prey to the politicians’ promises.Adversely politicians have disregarded and disrespected the populace to the extent that they have lost touch with the common folks.It brings to mind a similar scenario during campaign season in another country.
