| Residents on the Corentyne on Wednesday pledged to unite and join with the police in their fight against those who are trying to make their lives uncomfortable.A Corentyne resident makes a point.Following a spate of robberies in the Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant and surrounding areas on the Corentyne Coast, an emergency meeting was called. The meeting which was held at the Club Portuguese Quarters Head Office,Cheap Jerseys NFL China, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice was convened by Alex Foster, President and founder of the St. Francis Community Developers (SFCD) between residents, the police hierarchy, the business community and other influential persons.Residents came out in their numbers to express their concerns and to listen to the police top brass, among them Commander, Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam, and Officer in Charge of Sub Division Two, Deputy Superintendent, Marlon Taylor; Officer in Charge of Crime, Detective Inspector Dexter Torrington; Officer in Charge of Traffic, Assistant Superintendent Williams; and Complaints Officer, Deputy Superintendent Karl Wilson.Foster urged the residents to stand up for their rights and not to allow the community to be held under siege by a few miscreants. He said that the people must let their voice be heard and to call on the government to deliver the good life that was promised during the campaign.A number of the residents and some relatives who were brutalized and robbed by marauding gangs were on hand. They gave spine chilling episodes of the dastardly acts that were meted out to them and loved ones.Commander Amsterdam with over 33 years of service in the Guyana Police Force, stated that he has worked in various divisions and departments in the country and as far as he knows the police never lost a battle against criminals.The experienced police officer reminded the residents about Buxton and other troubled areas and stated that some of the reasons criminals strived there was that the residents never spoke out against wrong doings and criminal elements in the areas.When things got out of hand, the criminals turned around and terrorized the said residents of those areas. He urged the residents affected by the latest spate of crime in Berbice to be sensitive, be on the lookout and report anything suspicious to the police.He stated that from information gathered this is a small gang that is operating. He said, “Since most of you are saying that you know who the perpetrators are, then it is not difficult to apprehend them. These people will be apprehended, it is just a matter of time.“He urged the residents to trust the police and not to make a few bad experiences deter them from being friends with the police. If some police officers are not performing up to scratch, report them.“The matter will be investigated and the errant officers will be dealt with.”Amsterdam stated that the police have no control of the Magistracy and the Judicial system. They do not control how the Magistrates and Judges operate.He mentioned a known criminal who was arrested and charged and placed before the court. The man was granted bail and before he reached home he snatched somebody’s chain.He was arrested again and taken before the court and was granted bail again.Amsterdam gave the number of the senior officers present and called on the community to form themselves into groups and work with the police. He mentioned a number of strategies being undertaken to tackle the many social ills that are prevalent in the society.He urged the residents to form youth groups, community police groups and join the police in a new initiative that is called “Team Policing”.He told the residents that they could not go wrong. He also volunteered to train members of the Town Constabulary free of cost.Residents were candid in their complaints and raised a number of issues that are affecting them including the slow response of the police, lackadaisical attitude of some police officers, while a request was made for the removal of the police at the Rose Hall Town Outpost.Overseas-based Guyanese, Pandit Suresh Sugrim, along with a number of other residents made various inputs and suggestions at the meeting. Pandit Sugrim suggested that its time Guyana moves away from the archaic way of fighting crime and adopt a more modern approach.He suggests that all ranks be armed whilst on duty.The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club pledged massive support to the police.
