As Michigan s refreshingly vibrant wine and craft beer industry continues to grow, the planning and zoning boards of the communities who hope to attract these trendy new establishments are being challenged to stretch and grow as well.
On Nov. 1, Shelby Township s Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room will open a second location in Royal Oak, a little less than two years after opening the first; all of this, despite the fact that neither the state nor local communities have updated their zoning ordinance to include such establishments.
Everything always takes longer than you hope or anticipate, especially when you re first starting out, said MBTB s Cortney Casey, who with her husband, Shannon, co owns the establishment.
When MBTB opened its doors in late 2012, it became the first off site tasting room in Michigan to collaboratively represent, multiple, unaffiliated wineries, Casey explained.
They were estimating we could cram more than 120 people in the space, Casey said. That s definitely not what we re aiming for. I doubt that anyone who has visited the tasting room in Shelby Township would put us in the same league as a traditional bar.
Two appearances before the city Zoning Board of Appeals, armed passionate testimony and dozens of photos of the Shelby Township parking, ultimately resulted in a zoning variance that allows the Caseys to move forward with the plan.
We re just relieved that it all worked out, because we ve been so excited to come to Royal Oak for so long, Casey said.
Clyde Esbri, chairman of the Royal Oak planning commission, said he, too is relieved.
In trying to attract these new establishments, obviously it s in everybody s best interests to make the process as seamless as possible, said Esbri, explaining planning commissions and zoning boards need to consider new classifications and licensing.

We ve also had tons of people who live nearby contact us to say how thrilled they are that we re coming to the area, she said.
Set to be located on Woodward, just south of Webster, Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room will continue to offer tasting flights paired with small bites, in addition to take home wine sales by the bottle and case.
Michigan made snacks and products will also be available, along with special events including winemaker meet and greets, art exhibits, food and wine pairing sessions, wine education classes just to name a few.
Casey said the success of the Vegan Food and wine pairing nights in Shelby were especially surprising.
