This year, only 12 students in East Berbice/Corentyne wrote Spanish at the Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate l (CSEC).Of the 16 secondary schools between New Amsterdam and Corriverton, including East Canje and Black Bush Polder, only the New Amsterdam Multilateral and Berbice High Schools submitted entries for Spanish at this year’s CSEC.The New Amsterdam Multilateral entered one student, and that child secured a grade three pass. Berbice High School sent up eleven candidates – three gained grade four and the remainder got grade five passes.Education Officer in Region Six, Shafiran Bhajan, indicated that steps are being taken to address the situation with Spanish. She is optimistic that there would be a turn around within the next two years. According to her, the problem is the lack of adequately trained teachers in this particular subject area.There are at least eight in the system at present, and a new batch is to be employed shortly. “Other schools,Supply Cheapest Soccer Jerseys, like Berbice Educational Institute and Skeldon Line Path Secondary, are offering Spanish, and at all of these institutions the students are being groomed for the 2010 CSEC examination. There may be at least three of them in East Berbice /Corentyne, but they are not highly qualified.No student in Region Six wrote Music for the CSEC; at least through the secondary schools. According to the Region Six Education Officer, music is on the schools’ curriculum but the students must achieve a certain level before they are entered for the examination. To this end, the New Amsterdam Multilateral is aiming for the 2009 CSEC examination.The Education Officer said that she is satisfied with the results of this year’s Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate examinations. She gained ten passes with distinction and two grade one passes.Others on the top 11 list are Alisha Haniff, of the Skeldon Line Path,Air Max 97 For Sale, with seven passes with distinction, two grade one passes and one grade two; Francesca Koenta of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary secured six passes with distinction, two grade ones and three grade two passes; Hemala Seenauth of Berbice High School – five passes with distinction, two grade ones, four grade twos and two grade three passes. Aartie Devi Somwaru of Corentyne Comprehensive secured seven grade one passes, of which one is a distinction and three are grade two passes.Rashmini Sookraj of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School got four passes with distinction and four grade two passes.Deborah Tombran of J.C. Chandisingh gained six passes with distinction and two grade two passes. Mohadissa Ali of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School gained six passes with distinction, six grade two and one grade three passes.Omesh Ramsingh of New Amsterdam Multilateral School – four grade one passes, three of which are with distinction, five grade two and two grade three passes; and Sherhda Shepherd of New Amsterdam Multilateral School secured six grade one passes, one of which is with distinction, four grade twos and two grade three passes; and Roshana Schwiers of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School attained three passes with distinction, six grade one and five grade two passes.Of the 7,123 entries for 27 subjects entered for Region Six there were 494 grade one passes (seven percent), 1,373 grade two (19 percent), 2,102 grade three passes (30 percent), 1,451 passes with grade four (20), 1,539 grade five (22 percent) and 155 with grade six (two percent).Mrs. Bhajan indicated that there is still room for improvement in many areas, moreso with the amount of money pumped into education delivery on an annual basis.This year, Government allocated some $59M for the maintenance of buildings under Education, and $10M on infrastructure.Another step taken to up performance is to re-employ retired heads and senior teachers.These persons would function in a number of areas, such as working with the remedial classes, assisting in the induction of teachers, and giving technical support.The Department of Education has budgeted for ten such individuals. Already in the system are retired head teachers Claudia Johnson,Brock McGinn Jersey, who was posted at the Winifred Gaskin Memorial; Dhanmattie Ramnarine – Vryman’s Erven Annexe; Mohamed Zakir – Skeldon Annexe; and retired senior master Chandradat Kandarsammy, who is in charge of the Science Department at Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.
