Members of the private media yesterday staged another walkout,Nike Men Air Max 97, this time during a press briefing by Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy, as a continued form of protest against the ban on Capitol News reporter, Gordon Moseley. The Minister had called a press briefing to talk about conjunctivitis (red-eye) and the common flu. As he was making his opening statement, the reporters determined that his press briefing was not of national importance and left.Among those involved in the walkout was Guyana Times reporter Sarada Singh. She became the first casualty of the protest action against the Moseley ban. The Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Times, Neil Sooklall suspended her for walking out with the other media representatives. The Guyana Times had earlier signaled to the Guyana Press Association that it supported the proposed protest action such as the walkouts. The move by the Guyana Times comes a day after two of its reporters, Nigel Williams and Melissa Edwards, participated in a similar walkout at Parliament. This newspaper was reliably informed that when the editors of the newspaper learnt of the suspension they approached Sooklall in anger and protested what they said was his unilateral action. They argued that the company had taken a decision to support the actions of the Guyana Press Association and that nothing has been done to take an alternative position.President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), Denis Chabrol yesterday announced the decision by the association to withdraw its participation in the Crime Stoppers Programme given the government’s position towards the association. In a release to media operatives, Chabrol noted that the withdrawal was in view of remarks by President Jagdeo and GINA’s (Government Information Agency) wanton and mischievous attacks.Any future engagement with that body would be subjected to a review of the existing media climate, he said.Chabrol also responded to what he called the wicked and malicious utterances by the Government of Guyana, through GINA, that the GPA is part of the opposition forces.”The puerile and baseless fabrication is an attempt to discredit our protest action that has been forcing several cancellations of ministerial and other engagements with the media…Rather than devote their time and energy to concoct an excuse for banning journalist Gordon Moseley, President Bharrat Jagdeo would be better off lifting the ban unconditionally.”He added that in the face of mounting dissent locally, regionally and internationally, it is obvious that the President and GINA are at excruciating pains to find and justify a reason for the ban.
