Yesterday afternoon, 92 persons from the Sophia Training Centre (STC), graduated from an intense skills training programme that lasted approximately six months. The programme covered several areas. The graduation ceremony was held at the Carifesta Sports Complex.According to Brian King, who previously was the supervisor at the STC and was recently transferred to the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) to function in another senior capacity, this is the 20th non-residential skills training graduation since the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills Training Programme (YEST) introduced such an opportunity to young individuals. He explained that 265 persons applied to begin the course which commenced on May 10, 2010 but only 141 trainees were selected. The programme aimed at providing semi-skills to the vulnerable youths in today’s society, however, during the course 23 students dropped out due to reasons such as lack of finance for transportation and meals and because some individuals gained jobs.Another 23 applicants who were selected never reported for classes.King stated that for each area taught, there was 65 per cent practical work completed, while 35 per cent was theoretical. He told the gathering that he is hoping that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport extends the period from six months to nine months to ensure that more groundwork is covered. He also said that there is urgent need for active school libraries which will allow students who are involved in the programmes to complete homework and pursue more studies. Also, the STC is in need of a welding and fabrication laboratory as well as a handicraft classroom.Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, stated that children learn at different levels and some excel at academics while others excel at skills, so therefore, children must be able to access proper skills training. There were six areas of training offered for this batch of graduates, each having one top graduate and a runner up. Catering saw Shaneeza Haynes as the best graduating student with Martina Cole as runner up; Office Administration and Information Technology saw Steffi Peters as the best graduand while Mark Dinidial was the runner up and masonry saw Colin McKenzie as best graduate with Brian Baynes as the runner up.For the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning course,Wholesale Jerseys, Matthew Dindial was the best graduand while Kevin Pellew secured the runner up spot.Handicraft saw Latesha McGregor as the best graduand while Gallieo was the runner up and Ziggy Trotman was the best graduand in the field of Welding and Fabrication with Jason Canterbury following. The best graduating student for the handicraft course, Latesha McGregor, stated that the learning process was “very good” and that she “learnt a lot about making stuff especially place-mats, hand-mats and towel holders”.She explained that it was a great experience for her to endure and she would encourage others to participate.Another graduate, Ashanna Raghubir, said that she thought such an opportunity was very important in developing the skills of young people and would recommend the programme to anyone.
