Two West Berbice men, who were caught with a quantity of drugs back in 2008 up the Berbice River, were each found guilty of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and sentenced to three years imprisonment by Magistrate Omeyana Hamilton yesterday.The men, Wayne Mingo, 48, of Mc Rae Street, Rosignol West Bank Berbice, and Tailatman Latchman Deochand, 36, of Hosannah Street, Rosignol, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.In addition to the sentence, the two accused were each fined $30,000.They were accused of having the drugs on Saturday February 16, 2008, at a location on the Berbice River.Prosecutor, Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that on the day in question, a party of policemen was on marine patrol up the Berbice River, when they observed two men in a boat.Upon seeing the police,Air Max 90 Goedkoop, the men who were later identified as Deochand and Mingo, threw something into the river and tried to flee in their boat. However, their escape bid was short lived as they were quickly overhauled and captured by the cops.Mingo and Deochand were then taken to the spot where the objects were dumped in the river, and when it was retrieved, they were found to be black plastic bags containing what was then suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant.They were taken into custody where the contents were tested and weighed and amounted to 2,897 grams of marijuana. The men were subsequently charged and pleaded not guilty.The matter was first heard by Magistrate Chandra Sohan who had initially placed them on $2M bail each.Attorney at Law James Bond had first appeared for the drug runners. |
