| The United Minibus Union, an organization that was formed to represent the majority of the route 45 minibuses, has said that it was not invited to any of the meetings that the Ministry of Commerce held with the General Minibus Association (GMA), to discuss the reduction in bus fares.The new fares have been announced to take effect from today. President of the union, Eon Andrews, told this newspaper that the union is sympathetic to a decrease in bus fares, and will comply with the reduction since the members fully understand the plight of the Guyanese consumers.However, the union is angered about the fact that when the fare reduction was being deliberated over between Commerce Minister, Manniram Prashad,Wholesale Jerseys Cheap, and the GMA, the United Minibus Union was not invited to give a take on the issue.Andrews said that the Commerce Ministry is aware that the union exists, and he finds it very strange that it was kept out of the discussions.The union is of the opinion that although there will be a fare reduction, the union still needs to discuss other issues with Minister Prashad, since according to the union, there is not a level playing field.Andrews is of the view that although there has been a reduction in the price for fuel, the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) has refused to reduce its tariffs.He also pointed to the 16 percent VAT, and noted that bus drivers and conductors also have to make ends meet.This newspaper understands that when the price of a gallon of gas went over $1,000 at the pump, minibus fares throughout the country increased. The price on the world market went as high as $147 a barrel.The price of gasoline at the pump is now $777 per gallon which is a 20.7 per cent reduction and for diesel it is $791 per gallon. As a result, public transportation fares will be reduced proportionately.Andrews noted that a meeting between the union and Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, is scheduled to take place next week Wednesday in order to discuss the issues of touting and minibuses who are running the ‘hot plates’. |
