The following letter, Leroy Sane Pelipaita written by Monmouth to the Queen from the Tower, is indicative of his abject state of mind.
‘Madam,— I would not take the boldness of writing to your Majesty till I had shown the King how I do abhor the thing that I have done, and how much I desire to live to serve him.
