| The percentage of men who engage in heavy episodic drinking – the most harmful form of drinking – nearly doubled over five years and the rate among women nearly tripled, according to a new Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Report.Details of the first Regional Status Report on Alcohol and Health in the Americas were officially unveiled by PAHO/WHO yesterday.The Report warns that harmful use of alcohol increased in the Americas over a five-year period and recommends measures to limit availability, restrict marketing, and raise prices of alcohol by increasing taxes.It reveals that the percentage of men who engage in binge drinking in the Americas (four or five alcoholic drinks on one occasion at least once a month) rose from nearly 18 percent to 30 percent between 2005 and 2010, while the percentage among women increased from 4.6 percent to 13 percent.One in five (22 percent) current drinkers in the region, according to the Report too engages in heavy episodic drinking, notably higher than the global average of (16 percent).Based on the Report the highest rates of harmful alcohol consumption in the Americas are found in Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Venezuela, and Trinidad and Tobago.Adding to the problem is the fact that 10 percent of drinkers account for more than 40 percent of all alcohol consumed in the Americas, and the Region has on average the second-highest per capita consumption of all WHO regions, after Europe.Added to this it was deduced that an estimated six percent of the Region’s population suffers from an alcohol use disorder.“The increase in problem drinking can be attributed to the high availability of alcohol in our region’s countries, low prices,NFL Jerseys Cheap, and extensive promotion and advertising of alcoholic beverages,” said Maristela Monteiro, PAHO/WHO senior advisor on alcohol and substance abuse. “Any consumption of alcohol involves a health risk,” she warned,Cheap NBA Jerseys China, adding that frequent use can lead to dependency.In the Americas, alcohol was a contributory factor in the deaths of an estimated 300,000 people in 2012. However, no country has fully adopted all these measures.Thus far seven countries in the Americas have no restrictions on alcohol sales to people under 18 and only nine countries have alcohol taxes that reflect the amount of alcohol contained in beverages and that are adjusted to inflation.Added to this, nearly 70 percent of the region’s countries either lack regulations on advertising of alcoholic beverages, or their regulatory codes have been written by the alcohol industry itself.The Report also points to the fact that the implementation of restrictions on driving under the influence of alcohol is another measure that can reduce traffic injuries caused by alcohol consumption.However, only five countries in the Americas (Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay) have set a statutory ceiling of less than 0.04 g/dl for blood alcohol concentration.It was also highlighted that in the Americas, people consume an average of 8.4 litres of pure alcohol a year. This translates to 2.5 litres less than in Europe but 2.2 litres higher than the world average.The findings suggest too that the region also has the highest proportion of individuals who have consumed alcohol at least once in their life (over 81 percent of people over age 15). Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the Americas, representing 55.3 percent of total alcohol consumption.In 2010, the World Health Assembly approved a global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, which seeks to reduce the devastating effects of alcohol consumption on individuals, families, and countries’ development. A year later, during the 51st PAHO Directing Council,NFL Jerseys China, the Ministers of Health of the Americas committed themselves to implementing that strategy by approving a plan of action that seeks to reduce per capita levels of consumption and associated harms.
