He stated that representatives from the PPP, the Government and two members of the National Assembly’s staff will assemble at the old Office of the Opposition Leader to facilitate the procedure.Minister of State Joseph Harmon on Tuesday had refuted that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) ever approached the Government of Guyana to recover assets belonging to the Office of the Opposition Leader.Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira on Monday, had bemoaned the Government’s delay in handing over assets including upholstery, computers and office equipment to the Opposition leader’s office.Teixeira had also stated that when the party informed the Government on Saturday of its intentions to send a truck to the old Opposition leader’s office, they were informed that they could not proceed at the present time.When questioned, however, Minister Harmon expressed surprise at the PPP’s claims. According to him, the Government was never even approached by the PPP in regards to its assets at the office, nor would the Government have hindered the party had they done so.Harmon pointed out that the only items in the office were some furniture, a photocopy machine and some computers.“Why would we want to keep that?” he asked. “From the day that we moved from that office, they were entitled to it. But they took months, after the people of Guyana voted for them, to take up that position.”He did admit that the Presidential advisors on the Environment and National Security were currently occupying the office, which is being rented from Hughes, Fields and Stoby for $400,000 monthly.“The PPP has rented a building and it is not the same building that APNU used while in the opposition. The furniture is in the (old) building and they have to come and move it. I am not moving any furniture for Rohee or Jagdeo.”The Opposition Chief whip had also been adamant that the party would approach the State Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) in order to ensure that their assets are accounted for, though they have questioned the formation of the unit.“It is there and they can get it whenever they want. And the Clerk of the National Assembly is aware because he has to make the arrangements,” Harmon had said, querying why then would noise be made about furniture.On the matter of the 13 laptops which Teixeira had stated was missing when reconciliation was done between the Parliamentary register and a list from the office, the Minister was adamant that the Opposition Chief Whip had not contacted him or the President regarding the assets. He put it down to the party manufacturing issues.“If there (was) in fact an issue about computers, let them talk to us,” Harmon urged. “We will clarify and deal with those matters.”On Monday Teixeira identified the new office for Opposition leader and former President Bharrat Jagdeo as the old Suriname Embassy located at 308 Church Street. |
