| The Christmas season is one of giving and the members of the Diamond Grove (Formation) Lions Club are doing just that.The group is not yet registered by the International Lions Club due to the fact that it does not have the required membership of 20 or more persons.But that has not stopped the members from being of service to their community.The group has chosen to undertake one of its first projects in the two housing schemes by choosing two single-parent families living in poverty and providing them with some assistance in the form of hampers to see them through the season.But what started out as a seemingly simple task became a little more involved as the group learned more about the two families that they were helping out.In Diamond Housing Scheme,Mens/Womens Air Jordan 11 GS Velvet Heiress Black/Metallic Gold-White 852625-651, Simone Pompey, and her four children, the youngest an infant of five months, live in appalling conditions.What started as just a move to give the family some extra supplies of food and clothing became something else when the members of the group saw the conditions that the family was living under. They decided that they had to do more and that’s exactly what they are doing.The club hired a carpenter to make windows for the house because it had none and to make a bathroom and toilet as well as execute general repairs. The club members are donating furniture and mattresses because at present the only chairs in Simone’s house are worn and damaged chairs that her husband, who is now in jail, picked up from the dumps.This year the family has lights because the club had the house wired and the windows will have curtains, the walls may be painted and the children will have clothes and food.As President of the Club, Indira Anandjit put it, “they are literally living in four walls”. Another group member pointed out that despite all of that, the family is still very grateful to have a place to call their own, a home.Simone herself couldn’t stop expressing her gratitude to the club members saying that it was such a relief to be able to give her children a good Christmas.The other family that the group intends to assist is a widowed mother of six in the Grove Housing Scheme. Her eldest child is 15 and her youngest is less than a year old.According to Anandjit the members just feel that everyone should have a good Christmas and that’s what they were trying to do for these two women and their children.But she also noted that they intend to do much more community work in the coming year and for that they needed more members.So the club is issuing a call for new members; their next general meeting is on January 4 at 18:00hrs at the Diamond Secondary School. |
