A Surrey woman says a telephone scammer tried to swindle the woman out of $1,500 by impersonating the girl grandson over the phone and announcing he was in financial difficulty.
She told the Today she received the bogus call from a man within Labelle, Que., claiming to be the girl's grandson by name. He explained he was in Montreal with his older brother and that he needed money to get away from jail, though he would not explain how he got into difficulties.
The woman got wise to a scam and called the woman grandson, who was at work as you expected. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said town receives calls every now and then concerning phone scams.
"There's no chaotic season or low period for scams, but many of us do get them on a regular basis," he said.
RCMP officers regularly visit seniors' houses to educate the elderly on this variety of scam, which he said aids seniors protect themselves. However, he noted that many hit a brick wall scam attempts aren't documented, though informing the RCMP will help in further prevention.
"Reporting them to the police gives us really not a better idea of what's happening on the market, but it also keeps us updated on different trends and perhaps local suspects that we could deal with and stop these frauds from happening," he stated.
