| Under the theme “Working for the Elderly, Celebrating their contributions to Guyana”, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security has designated October as the “Month of the Elderly.”The Palms, a geriatric facility funded by the Government,Andy Greene Jersey, is an institution that provides free services and a shelter for destitute senior citizens residing in Guyana.The facility which has been established since 1874 under the British colonial rule was then called the Alms. Batches of persons will be taken on a daily basis to places like the Museum, The Botanical Gardens, Providence Stadium, the Caricom Secretariat and the International Convention Centre.One day will be set aside to take all eligible residents to Splashmins Fun Park. According to Singh, the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security has promised to donate food hampers to all residents of the facility who have surpassed the age of 100.Singh is calling on young people all across Guyana to “show some sort of respect for the elderly.” |
