| Although the Health Ministry’s National Blood Bank experienced some challenges in providing blood to hospitals throughout the year, Guyana is expected to achieve its target of acquiring 8,000 units of blood from donors by the end of December.This is according to Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who emphasised that the Ministry is aiming to obtain 10,000 units of blood for 2012. His comments came before he acceded to the office of Minister of Agriculture.He stated that the Blood Bank continues to have challenges meeting demand owing to increasing services offered by the hospitals. For instance, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has increased its services in the area of surgery.Dr. Ramsammy added that the demand for blood exceeds regular collection, hence the need for more persons to donate blood. This has been happening through the Ministry’s Voluntary Blood Donation programme.Previously, the Family Replacement Donors programme was utilized. This allowed an individual to receive blood when a family member donates. With the Voluntary Blood Donation programme blood is received from donors, stored and accessed by patients at hospitals.An advantage of having voluntary donation, the blood received is screened. Dr. Ramsammy asserted that donors undergo a prescreening session, those who have been identified as risks are not allowed to donate blood.The blood is also screened for a number of infectious markers such as syphilis, gonorrhoea,Discount Air Max 90, and HIV before being disseminated to hospitals. This has helped to prevent the transmission of diseases through blood transfusion. |
